General Stores
When we went through the old township records we could dispose of according to our approved records policy, of course we kept samples and examples. We hope you remember or heard of some of these places, people and events. Please take a few minutes to write down something you know or remember and send it to us for the Bicentennial Committee to use and then archive. If you have an old picture to share, we can scan and return it. Email bostontownship@bostontownship.org, send to PO Box 123, Peninsula, 44264 or deliver to the Fiscal Officer, lower level, 1775 Main Street. Call us: 330-657-2059. Trustee Randy Bergdorf will be pleased to take anything you want to share. He is at the Peninsula Library and Historical Society during the week except Friday's and Sunday's.

Hamiltons Grocery
Maude Carter's Store/Hamilton's Grocery: The building which housed both of these businesses is located at 2185 Everett Rd. in the village of Everett. The original proprietor at this location was Gurden P. Harrington, who started a general store in 1867 after having been a canal boatman and owner of several canal boats. Harrington would be in business here for many years before the building was rented to Ivel Kepner who ran it for a short time until building her own store at the northwest corner of Everett and Riverview Roads. After Ivel Kepner, Maude Carter took over the Harrington location, remaining in business here for twenty-six years. Maude Carter sold out to Bruce and Bertie Hamilton who ran the store for twenty-three years. During much of this time the Everett post office was located in this building until it was phased out in the 1950s. By then a widow, Bertie Hamilton sold the business in 1967. The subsequent owners would be Roberts, Bryant, Payne, and Krisman. The store's final incarnation was as Allison's County Store which dispensed Sunoco gasoline from the pumps out front. The business and building were purchased by the National Park Service in the 1980s and offices are now located here.back to top
