When we went through the old township records we could dispose of according to our approved records policy, of course we kept samples and examples. We hope you remember or heard of some of these places, people and events. Please take a few minutes to write down something you know or remember and send it to us for the Bicentennial Committee to use and then archive. If you have an old picture to share, we can scan and return it. Trustee Randy Bergdorf will be pleased to take anything you want to share. He is at the Peninsula Library and Historical Society during the week except Friday's and Sunday's.

Bigelow

Bigelow Chevrolet: Herbert Bigelow started in business in Peninsula in 1911 with a coal yard and building supply business located just to the east of the Peninsula railroad depot in the area now occupied by the Peninsula Art Academy and Elements Gallery. From this location, Bigelow also began selling Studebaker automobiles, but would switch to selling Chevrolets in 1914. Bigelow formally organized the Bigelow Motor Company in 1916, erecting a dedicated auto dealership at the southeast corner of Main St. and Riverview Rd. in 1917. The sales and showroom building burned in 1927 but was rebuilt in a style featuring stucco walls and Mediterranean tile roof parapets. Herb Bigelow retired in 1935, turning the business over to his son Lloyd. Under Lloyd's leadership, Bigelow Motors became a Peninsula institution by providing autos for community raffles and housing the village's post office. By 1970, Lloyd had turned the business over to his two sons, Doug and Dick. In order to continue to expand the business, Bigelow Chevrolet relocated to Parma in 1972.
